Psoriasis is a chronic (autoimmune) skin disease that occurs when the immune system speeds up the growth of skin cells.

Causes:

The immune system attacks the body’s own skin cells (autoimmune).

Other Factors:
  • Genetics
  • An imbalanced immune system
  • Triggers: stress, infections, cold weather, certain medications
Symptoms:
  • Thick red patches covered with silvery-white scales
  • Dry, cracked skin that may sometimes bleed
  • Itching or a burning sensation
  • Commonly appears on the elbows, knees, scalp, and back
Prevention:
  • Avoid triggers (stress, infections)
  • Keep the skin well-moisturized
  • Use moisturizers consistently
  • Follow your doctor’s treatment for long-term control
