Pityriasis Rosea

Pityriasis rosea is a type of skin rash that is common, harmless, and usually goes away on its own without specific treatment.

Causes:
  • The exact cause is not clearly known.
  • It is believed to be related to a viral infection (for example, certain types of herpes viruses, not sexually transmitted herpes).
  • It is not a contagious disease – it does not easily spread to other people.
Symptoms:
  • “Herald patch”: a single large, oval, pink patch that appears at the beginning
  • After a few days/weeks:
    • Many smaller patches appear on the chest, back, and abdomen
    • A pattern resembling a Christmas tree (especially on the back)
  • Itching (mild to moderate)

    Sometimes:

    • Mild fever
    • Headache
    • Fatigue (similar to mild flu-like symptoms)
Prevention:

There is no specific way to prevent it because the exact cause is unclear. However:

  • Practice good personal hygiene
  • Maintain a healthy immune system (eat well, get enough sleep)
  • Avoid skin irritation (harsh soaps, excessive hot water)
